The Lowdown On Bucket Trucks
Tuesday 17 August 2010 @ 1:57 pm

Bucket trucks are mainly used in heavy industries and one can spot them along the roadsides without much trouble. For instance, you can see people doing work at heights or repairing telephone connections on poles or fixing something at heights. If this is so then you have seen a bucket truck. Bucket truck is used to lift workers to places at heights.

These trucks come in a number of shapes and sizes just to make-work easy. Bucket trucks are used in many different purposes but the most common is power lineman. With the use of these types of additional equipments, they can complete work in less time. Bucket trucks are very safe for people who work at severe heights.

The design given to the bucket truck includes a storage bin, which is capable of holding tools, instruments and material required by the worker. To provide extra stability some bucket trucks are specifically designed with single or double arm outrigger jacks. Some designs are operated by the auxiliary engine, which is placed on the back section of the bucket truck, while some of them powered by actual truck engine.

One must keep in mind that the bucket truck makes work easier, comfortable, and safe and it is easy to operate but still it is heavy equipment that requires a proper handling. It requires a very minimum maintenance.

Bucket trucks come under OSHA standard guidelines, which must be followed for the safety. Here are some important guidelines how to use a bucket truck conveniently:

The bucket truck can be constructed of fiberglass, reinforced plastic, metal, or wood. The truck should be used to elevate employees to any job site located above ground.

Controls must be clearly and visibly marked and defined by function.

Bucket trucks may be modified for use other than the intended use but only if the manufacturer or equal authority receives approval to the modification in writing.

Load and distribution should always be checked to make sure they fall within the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The brakes must be set.

Bucket trucks should not be driven if employees are there in the bucket.

Controls should be tested every day prior to the bucket truck being used.

The lower controls should not be operated without the permission of the employee in the bucket expect in the case of an emergency.

Any employee operating the bucket truck must wear appropriate protective gear at all times including safety boots, safety goggles, gloves, a hardhat, etc. to protect from falling objects.

For the business owners, the key to safety is training. If one will operate the bucket truck using OSHA guidelines, this piece of heavy equipment can provide yearlong support with minimum maintenance expenditure.

Keep Your Truck Bed Clean
Tuesday 15 June 2010 @ 1:57 pm

It was bound to happen. You lend your truck to a friend who says they have a couple of pieces of furniture to move and it comes back to you with scratches in the bed area of your truck. It wouldnt have been so bad had they apologized, but now you have to deal with unsightly scratches that can only make your trucks value deteriorate quicker. Had you thought about it, you would have stuck a bed liner in your truck ahead of time to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

The above account actually happened to me as I was trying to help a young couple out with a good deed. I was warned in advance by a friend that the couple would take advantage of me and he was, unfortunately, correct. Lets just say that it was a bitter lesson learned.

Twenty years have passed and I no longer have that old F-150. My current people mover is an SUV, so I have no open area to deal with. Yet, I likely will have a pickup truck again in the near future and I have looked closely at some of the products available to owners today, particularly bed liners.

Advances in technology have brought new products on the market that either did not exist a few years ago or were too expensive for the average driver. Some of the bed liners you can purchase include:

Spray on liners. Thats right; you can have super-thick polyurethane sprayed right into the bed of your truck. At one quarter inch thick, you can receive protection from scratches or fluid and it is completely air tight. One manufacturer says this about their product, It’s scratch-resistant, slip-resistant, and really easy to clean.

Roll on liners. Similar to spray on liners, are roll on liners. Everything that I have read about roll on liners means a lot of work for the person who does the job, which typically is the trucks owner. After sweeping and cleaning the bed free of all debris, you will then need to sand the entire truck bed as well as the sides before applying the rubberized coating. The sanding forces the coating to adhere to the bed area and I must tell you that between the sanding, masking tape, rubbing alcohol, newspapers, and particle masks, this is one smelly and messy job!

Installed liners. Okay, I am biased. If it were up to me, this is the product I would purchase. Option number one is too expensive; option number two is too messy; while the third option – an installed liner — makes the most sense to me. Still, you need to be careful in this area too as some bed liners are certainly better made than others. Look for those liners that are scratch and dent resistant, waterproof, chemical proof, stain resistant, and durable, i.e. not subject to cracking, chipping, or fading.

In all, a bed liner makes perfect sense for any truck, particularly if you can put one in that covers the sides and the wheel wells. All the decent ones I have seen are nicely padded and can easily be cleaned. Learn all about the product you want before making a decision to buy.

Car and Truck Alternators
Tuesday 27 April 2010 @ 1:57 pm

Has your vehicles alternator failed? Are you absolutely certain that it isnt your battery or starter? Determining which part has failed is essential toward avoiding unnecessarily replacing something that hasnt failed, like your battery. Lets take a look at some steps you can take to determine that your alternator, in fact, has bit the dust.

If you own an alternator testing machine, you can test to see whether your cars alternator is charging correctly. For most people this isnt practical as few motorists own such an expensive piece of equipment. For everyone else, there is a practical way for you to easily check to see if your alternator is working properly:

  • Connect a volt meter to your car’s battery
  • Start your car
  • Observe the voltage output on the volt meter so that you can make an accurate determination. If there is an increase in voltage when you start your car, then your alternator is more than likely working just fine. Likely, you battery is the culprit; check the battery itself and the connections to make a final determination. If there is no increase in voltage, you are likely looking at having to replace your alternator.

The next step, of course, is to determine whether you will replace the alternator yourself or have someone else do the job. Some things to keep in mind as you weigh your options include:

  • If you trust your vehicle to a mechanic, what will the total cost of the work be including the part and labor? Is there a guarantee?
  • If you decide to do the work yourself, do you have all the tools on hand to get the work done? Do you own a repair manual? Do you want to purchase a new alternator or will a remanufactured unit suffice?Your choices today are much greater than they were ten years ago, before internet shopping became a strong factor in reigning in high auto parts prices. Several online wholesalers, including the Auto Parts Warehouse, are in business to sell auto parts directly to you. Costs are generally much lower than local retail establishments and parts are from well known manufacturers, names you can trust in the business.Doing the work yourself can save you time and money as well as give to you a sense of accomplishment. With a trusty repair manual at your side you can replace your vehicles alternator quickly and accurately.
